Generic Zyban: What you need to know

Generically named bupropion hydrochloride, Zyban is a drug used as an aid to stop smoking. Although it was initially marketed as an antidepressant, generic Zyban is now more commonly sold in the market as an aid in smoking cessation.

History

Generic Zyban was discovered and developed in 1969 under GlaxoSmithKline, which was formerly known as Burroughs Wellcome. In 1985, it was approved for release by Food and Drug Administration as an antidepressant, but the trade name used was Wellbutrin. It was soon pulled out from the market because of seizures of some patients that it caused due to its high dosage prescription. It was modified to take on sustained release action before it was put back in the market as Wellbutrin SR and later Wellbutrin XL. As Zyban’s ability to help people quit smoking was discovered, FDA approved the same drug to be released under another trade name, which is now the generic Zyban that we have in the market. It was also later used as a therapeutic medication for seasonal affective disorder.

Dosage

Treatment with generic Zyban should be done while the patient is still smoking. The most common dosage is 300 mg per day. This dose is usually divided into 2 150-mg intakes per day, 8 hours apart. If taken as an antidepressant, a dose higher than 300 mg must not be taken because overdose can worsen depression or suicidality of patient. The pill when taken must not be crushed or mixed with anything else or chewed. The entire treatment’s dosage is tapered, the schedule will be provided by your physician.

Side effects

Very common side effects include dry mouth, insomnia, dizziness, nausea, and respiratory rhinitis. Such medications include diazepam, paroxetine, sertraline, norfluoxitine, orphenadrine, and more.

When taken in very large doses it can cause hypertension, sinus tachycardia, visual hallucinations, lethargy, and more. A few cases have been reported about generic Zyban overdose causing death. As the drug is also known to sometimes cause seizures, nicotine patches are preferred.
